This work investigates the segment of German humanist political opinions of
Conrad Celtis, his Viennese associates Jakob Ziegler, Johannes Aventin, and
Joachim Vadian, and the more familiar figures of Erasmus of Rotterdam and
Ulrich von Hutten. What emerges from this study of personal convictions is
that these humanists formed an influential party of national restoration. The
passion driving their politics was patriotism--an enthusiastic love of the
German nation, its culture, its heritage, and its potential.
